Day 2 began with the Gen Next show, where new designers showed some promise, but for the most part, it was student work; as raw and as experimental as student work gets. Anna Liza Ganguly and Anita Walia rustled up last years ongoing trends, geometric pattern mix and prints, power shoulders and bold metallic accents. With an aim to appear modern, their collection wasn't quite that. Deepti Pruthi did not aim to innovate out of the ordinary either, however, her palate of nude caramel and latte, soft pastel summer cocktail dresses would find a lot of takers in young belles ambling up to the nearest store to get their hands on her pretty dresses. Manas Dash, his profile says that he worked at Manish Arora, one look at Manas Dash's spicy colour palette, mythological prints and quirky shapes, and you are not surprised. The kitschiness and colour mix is very reminiscent of what
Nida Mahmood used in her 'Ravan Mask' collection from last season's WLIFW. Miriam Strehlau did wearable boutique clothes, in
Holi splash tie-dyes and tired bright boho; quite Barbie doll-esk on the whole. Shivaji Dutta perhaps the most matured of the lot in terms of design approach, had an interesting piece or two, graphic, dots, using just one mustard tone, his collection could have easily skidded into monotony but it didn't. Timsy and Siddharth's design aesthetics need a lot of fine tuning, a few years of experience should do them good and turn them into competitive menswear designers.
